Hij werd er geboren maar verliet Dublin toen hij nog jong was. Hij woonde ondermeer in Italië en in Parijs. Ondanks zijn vertrek uit Dublin (toen hij begin 20 was) en ondanks zijn verzet tegen de kleinburgerlijkheid van Dublin, spelen al zijn boeken en korte verhalen zich daar af. Bekende boeken van Joyce zijn Ulysses, Dubliners en Finnegan’s Wake. De locaties in Dublin uit zijn grootste en meest bekende werk Ulysses kan je stuk voor stuk bezoeken. Het boek wordt overigens elk jaar op 16 juni uitgebreid gevierd met Bloomsday. Er zijn in Dublin een paar standbeelden van Joyce te vinden en er is een James Joyce museum. Joyce’ werk wordt algemeen ervaren als lastig, met name door de modernistische stijl in Ulysses en Finnegan’s Wake. Maar laat je niet teveel afschrikken. Zijn vroegere werk is prachtig en toegankelijk. Zijn korte verhaal ‘The Dead’ is een juweel dat je eigenlijk niet mag missen als je van literatuur houdt. Mij heeft dat verhaal zodanig geraakt dat het me altijd zal bijblijven. He was born there but left Dublin when he was still young. He lived in Italy and Paris, among other places. Despite his departure from Dublin (when he was in his early twenties) and despite his resistance to Dublin’s petty bourgeois mentality, all his books and short stories are set there. Famous books by Joyce include *Ulysses*, *Dubliners*, and *Finegan’s Wake*. You can visit the locations in Dublin from his greatest and most famous work, *Ulysses*, one by one. Incidentally, the book is celebrated extensively every year on June 16th with Bloomsday. There are a few statues of Joyce to be found in Dublin, and there is a James Joyce museum. Joyce’s work is generally perceived as difficult, particularly due to the modernist style in *Ulysses* and *Finegan’s Wake*. But don’t let that deter you too much. His early work is beautiful and accessible. His short story ‘The Dead’ is a gem that you really shouldn’t miss if you love literature. That story touched me so deeply that it will always stay with me.
